1% Salary Reduction

One of the proposals for cost reduction in the district is a 1% salary reduction for all employees. My colleagues are very valuable - I don't want to risk them leaving for another district or leaving the professional all together. Teachers need to be paid more money not less.

Yes this is on the list but remember it was a district employee that asked this to be considered. This did not come from administration, all suggestions are on the list and it does not mean it will happen. The only way to pay the teacher's more is to cut in the classroom, sadly. I am a parent in the district and former distrct employee. Our State is in a crisis and we all must work together. Many people are losing their jobs and many are taking salary cuts. In private industry I saw 4-10% salary cuts, benefits cut, no retirement and days off without pay. Then layoff's. Teacher's will be affected by our State Crisis and so will our students. We must work together to pass a parcel tax for our student's future.

Is a 1% salary decrease something that the board can do? Or does it have to be negotiated?

I believe it would have to be negotiated and from what I heard at the PAC meeting it would be an absolute last resort. Everyone recognizes we need to pay our teacher's more, not less.
